Parasocial: "denoting a relationship characterized by a one-sided, unreciprocated sense of intimacy felt by a fan or follower for a well-known or prominent figure (typically a media celebrity), in which the fan or follower comes to feel that they know the celebrity as a friend" (Dictionary.com)
In this conversation, we're trying to unpack some of the patterns that shape our parasocial relationships online. At the end of the day, we're all seeking belonging and community and sometimes our longing for it causes us to get drawn into unhealthy relationship dynamics online.
We made reference to M. Scott Peck's work on community building, in his book The Different Drum: Community-Making and Peace. The four stages of community he names are: pseudocommunity, chaos, emptiness, and true community.
