The world feels chaotic right now. How do we ground ourselves?

Krista and Heather share some thoughts in the latest coffee break chat

On Monday mornings, Krista and I meet on Zoom, and almost always, we start with a rant fuelled by the news of the day. Recently, that rant tends to be about how scary things feel right now, in the face of an authoritarian force taking over the US political system. The impact of this new presidency (and the accompanying “broligarchy”) is far reaching, as our government in Canada scrambles to respond to the threat of tariffs, and friends all over the world worry about deportations, loss of essential programs, and the threat of increased discrimination.

Having spent several years working in international development, and having traveled to many of the places where USAID funds programs, I am one of many around the world who worry about the significant ripples that will be caused by the threat to this agency. It seems unconscionable that so many people’s lives are being thrown into chaos by a wealthy circle of (mostly) men in Washington.

And yet… somehow we have to keep our feet on the ground and our hearts in the right place. Somehow we have to keep showing up for the work that matters.

After we’ve ranted for awhile, Krista and I usually manage to co-regulate and return a state of calm so that we can focus on the work at hand. Especially in the chaos, this work matters, and our ability to return, again and again, to a state of groundedness matters.

This is the latest in our Coffee Break Chat series. You can find earlier chats in our YouTube channel.

The first webinar for Leadership for Liminal Spaces was a great success and we look forward to the next one, on the Core Competencies of a Grounded Guide, on February 27. We hope you join us!
