Years ago, when I was a new homeowner, I told my dad about the frustration I was having over a tree that had been cut down but kept sending shoots into my lawn. My dad, a lifelong farmer, chuckled at my innocence. “The best way to grow a tree,” my dad said, “is to cut it down.”
